PRESENT MOMENTS’, AN EXHIBITION BY CAROLINE WARD
KELLY’S RESORT HOTEL, WEXFORD FESTIVAL OPERA 2023.
In this exhibition I am exploring domestic spaces/objects and ordinary scenes, in the hope of engaging the viewer in a dialog of perception and reflection. This varied body of work is a contemplative exploration of symbolic fragments from my surrounding environment. I appreciate looking closely at small, yet quite ordinary objects to find the richness within them. These subtleties are sometimes overlooked by the passer-by. My paintings come from quiet
observation and a curiosity in finding the stillness of a moment.
Light is the essence of most of my paintings, as it reveals form, relates time, and suggests mood. I find inspiration in the banality of life and aim to elevate everyday moments into something refined. My use of light and shadow highlights the beauty within the scene/object and emphasizes the delicacy of the captured moment.
My paintings are a personal expression of my fascination with the fallacy that colour perception is definite and unchanging, which is revealed by the play of light across an array of objects, as colour is transformed into infinitesimal variations. I investigate the interaction between objects, their shadows, and the surrounding space as light travels over and amongst them. While diverse in theme and subject, the inspiration for my work is drawn on observation, my eye stops, and the process begins.
I have never been too appreciative of talk around visual art. I am a believer in a non-expert eye. Nothing can teach you to admire, dislike, or remain indifferent to what you see. Some history around the piece or the artist can be insightful at times but will not help your soul feel touched by it. Technique is not what solely interests me either. Each painting is a learning experience. I like to be experimental and eager to look around the next corner.
Painting is mediation that quiets the mind as I make an image come alive. In painting there are no limitations, the only limitation is yourself.
